This pine tree located by Kiyomizu Kannon-do in Kaneiji-Temple in Ueno Park is known for its unusual branching pattern. Loved by the people since the Edo Period, the pine tree has even appeared in the collection of works called “Meisho Edo Hyakkei,” or “One Hundred Sceneries of Edo” by the famous ukiyoe artist Hiroshige Utagawa, who is best known for “Tokaido Gojusantsugi.” The original tree was sadly lost during a hurricane in the early Meiji Period, but was revived in December, 2011.
